We Survived!

We all survived the White Rock Half Marathon yesterday. This year it was a family affair with me, Dad, Shannon, Brad, and Brad’s mom, Sharon, all entering the big race. Plus my superstar friend, Janell, did the full marathon!

Not so great weather conditions seem to follow me. When I did the full marathon in Kona, it was blazing hot. When I did the half marathon last year, it was freezing cold and raining. This year, it was humid with 20-30 mph winds (as you see by Mallory’s flying hair in the picture). By the time me and Shannon finished, it was almost 80 degrees*. Will I ever have a partly cloudy/sunny in the 50s kind of race day?

When you’re walking all 13.1 miles, it takes a long time, but I was actually pleased that despite the insane winds I came in 8 minutes faster than last year at 3:18.

One thing I was not so pleased with was the new half marathon route. They started everyone (full and half) at the same time, which made traffic horrible. Then the half route finished the last 5K on the Katy Trail. What a downer. You couldn’t see where you were or where the finish line was, and it was eerily quiet. That’s not quite the motivation you’re looking for as you finish. But we survived!

Way to go Dad, Shannon, Brad, Sharon, and Janell!

And a big thanks to my friend Tara for lending me her persona for the day after my little registration problem. As people shouted “Go Tara!’ I had to remember that they were cheering for me. It was kind of fun being a Tara for the day.

*As true with all Texas weather, just wait awhile and things will change. At the same time today as we finished yesterday, it was 30 degrees outside!

Thoughts & Cookies

  • If you know Tate well, you know that his food preferences change every day. Literally. He’s never been a big fan of cheese. Until today. He likes brie cheese! Who knew? And who knows how that will work with the grocery budget?
  • I’ve loved getting all of the Christmas cards in the mail and am hopefully about to get ours sent out. If you’re on our list, please know that Tate does smile. Just not if it involves his mother's unrealistic expectations for that perfect family picture. :)
  • You may have read about my unfortunate mistake of somehow forgetting to sign up for the half marathon I had been training for. I’ll protect some privacy here, but just know that I’m in. I’ll just be answering to a different name that day. Pray for good weather on Sunday!
  • Tate’s birthday and party were so much fun. I’m still collecting pictures and will post soon. How is it possible that I have a 2-year-old? I still feel like I’m a brand new mom figuring everything out.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Christmas festivities have been in full swing lately. The other day, Tate got to make his first ever Christmas cookies with his friend, Jackson. I think he eventually got the hang of it and had a good time. Although, his favorite part may have been shaking the maracas/sprinkles bottles. And yes, one of them didn’t have its lid on. Woops…sorry Laura! Still a lot of fun!
Eyeing the sprinkles...
See, he does smile!
The final product. (It's a reindeer.)
To my sweet little boy,
How is it possible that you are already 2 years old? I hear other parents say it often, but it’s so true that the time since you’ve come into our lives seems to have gone at warp speed. It seems like just yesterday that the doctor placed you in my arms at 8:10 p.m. on December 5, 2006. While at the same time, it’s hard to even remember what our life was like before you were here. Time goes so fast, and I hope I can savor every minute I’m given as your Mom.
This second year of your life has definitely been a year of firsts for you. You started army crawling, standing, crawling on all 4s, cruising, and walking. Yes, all in less than a year! And now, we have to clear everything out of your way as you run full-speed ahead most anywhere you go. You have worked so hard this year to learn all of these new skills, and we are SO proud of you. It has given us true joy to see you discover this new world of mobility. It has seemed to make you much happier as well.
As strange as it is, I’ve learned a lot about myself as your mother, as I’ve learned more about you. It confirms to me that God makes us each so unique and different. Your personality seems to be more similar to your Daddy’s compared to mine. But I love that about you and appreciate so many characteristics that I know will be such important strengths for you as you grow up.
You have become quite an enthusiastic, social, and outgoing little boy. Most of the time when we go out to dinner or go to a store, you find a way to say “Hi!” to anyone and everyone that walks by. Sometimes you keep saying it over and over until they finally turn around to acknowledge you.
You also have a lot to say. Sometimes it’s in your “Tateish,” but each day you’re talking more and more and recently you’ve started putting two words together pretty regularly. There are still some things you say wrong, but we can’t bear to correct it because it’s too cute. When you see a bicycle or motorcycle, you will say “Go, go, go, Daddy.” You started that this year after watching a bike race with Daddy. You can spot them in a heartbeat and say it every time.
And speaking of your Daddy. You LOVE your Daddy. I know you love me too, but you definitely have a unique bond with your Daddy. You get so excited to see him when he comes home every day. It might be because he’s started taking you to get Krispy Kreme donuts every Sunday morning.
We learned very quickly that you are a true explorer. You don’t sit still much at all and love to check out anything and everything that is around you. It’s sometimes a dangerous combination with your boundless energy and high pain tolerance. It’s rare that there isn’t some kind of bruise or scratch on you somewhere. Sometimes we think that you think you can physically do the things a 5-year-old can. That’s hard for me to balance letting you try things while making sure you don’t get hurt. Thank goodness most of the times you fall, you’re pretty quick to bounce right back up and keep going.
My favorite part of the day with you right now is actually right before you go to bed. Daddy gives you a bath and gets you dressed in your PJs. Then I get to rock you in the chair and sing Jesus Loves Me with you. Then we say a prayer. You put your cute little hands together and then we say thank you for all of your favorite people…and sometimes for football as well.
Things you love: watching SportsCenter with Daddy, playing with any ball, playing with any car, reading books, playing outside, swinging, your grandparents, your aunts and uncles, your cousins, your friends, milk, Chick Fil-A, Chipotle, blueberries, yogurt, guacamole, rice, beans, throwing your food, finding the moon, swimming, bath time, Gymboree class, going to church, fun music, Sesame Street and Elmo, the Backyardigans, Macy, trains, fire trucks, jumping on pillows, and taking 3-hour naps (keep it up!).
Things you don’t like: trying new foods, being constrained, holding hands in the parking lot, sleeping past 7:00 a.m., getting your diaper changed, and when I stop to talk with people.
You truly bring so much joy to not only your parents but to others as well. I can’t put into words how thankful I am for this gift God has given me. I hope and pray for wisdom every day so I can help raise and prepare you for your wonderful future that awaits.
Thanksgiving 2008
I'm not sure how exciting it is to see what we did on Thanksgiving, since it probably looks pretty similar to what everyone else did. But this post is just for my grandmother. Yes, my Grandma Nat up in Oregon is the blog's newest reader. I figured she would like to see what some of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were up to. Now if she can figure out how to leave a comment, I will be SO impressed.
The day started with Tate's first viewing of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Selfishly, I was so excited that he enjoyed watching it. Even as a grown adult, I still love it and hope that he'll humor me in watching it for several more years.
Then we went hunting.
Just kidding. :) That is a picture from our Thanksgiving Day at the Zoo. You know this bird was sure glad to be there instead of on your dinner table. For the locals, Thanksgiving Day is the day to go to the zoo. We practically had the entire place to ourselves. So Tate got to do a lot of running around.
Morgan and Mallory got up close and personal with a dragon.
And here's the Thanksgiving Miracle. A picture where ALL 3 kids are looking at the camera. We couldn't believe it!
There was actually even more entertainment at the zoo involving my husband and a harassing squirrel. If you haven't already, you can see that here.
Then off to Mom & Dad's for our traditional Thanksgiving dinner along with our family friends, the Barbarenas. I didn't realize it until I was much older, but we're a little strange and have Thanksgiving dinner as a dinner (instead of lunch) and eat around 7:00 p.m. I may never have to actually cook a turkey myself, because my Mom loves to do it. By all means, go for it. We all agreed that this year's turkey was one of the yummiest yet.
And the best way to work off the calories of that big dinner...dance with Mimi! My Mom has truly gotten her money out of this oh-so-annoying-singing-and-dancing Easter bunny. The kids LOVE it and could play it and dance with Mimi for hours.
And what holiday is complete without Aunt Kelly bringing out some kind of festive accessory to make everyone wear?
See, everyone gets to wear it.
The day was fun and relaxing. And as always, it is a wonderful way to recount and be grateful for the numerous blessings that I am surrounded by.
Twilight
After Sunday afternoon, I’m feeling quite hip and with the times...and quite frivolous at the same time. 13 other young mom-types and I shared the matinee theater with about 100+ tweens to see Twilight. My $8 contributed to the $70 million it made this weekend. Yes, the vampire movie. Call me crazy, but I actually enjoyed it.
I read the book for my Book Club back in August. I thought it was OK. It was a fun, easy read, but I wasn’t running to the bookstore to read the next one in the series. So I went into the movie with very low expectations. Truth be told, once the movie was over, I ran to the bookstore to get the next book in the series.
Of course the movie had its cheesy moments, and of course the acting isn’t all Oscar-worthy, but I was pretty engrossed (along with the 12-year-old sitting in front of me) and found myself thinking that this vampire guy is really growing on me. Did I just really say that?
So for you other Twilighters out there (fess up!), what did you think? Some of my thoughts: Bella was great and cuter than what I pictured, Edward got better and better as the movie went on (and cuter), the beginning scenes when he’s mad are strangely funny, the glittery skin scene was goofy, the white skin looked too powdery at times, Bella’s Dad was great, Jasper was just odd, Jessica was a hoot, and I’m hooked.
I'm Officially A Moron
This may go down as one of my all-time blond moments. You know that Half Marathon I mentioned awhile ago? The one that I've been training for. The one I've spent 3-4 days a week walking miles and miles at a time. The one that my Dad, sister, brother-in-law, and several friends are also doing. Well, somehow in the midst of all of my training, I forgot the tiny detail of actually registering for it. And as of last week, it's sold out!
So, I'm officially a moron. I admit it. I really feel like quite the fool and have no idea or excuse for how this happened. I've e-mailed the registration contact asking about the waiting list and am secretly hoping for lots and lots of people to chicken out or get hurt and not show up. (I really don't wish for anyone to get hurt, but maybe some kind of great news that causes them to bail!)
I guess I just keep training until then and hope for the best. If not, maybe I'll just walk alongside the route and have Wade award me my medal from last year at a makeshift finish line.
Let the ridicule begin.
A Good Day
Today was a good day for two reasons...
First off, it's Veteran's Day. The older I get, the more I realize what an important story my grandfather has as a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. I'm so glad that he has his war stories captured on a DVD from an interview several years ago. Honestly, marrying Wade has helped me learn even more about my grandfather's service. Wade is a complete history nut...especially WWII...so he helps me get my facts straight.
Here's the most recent picture we have with Grandpa back in July. Thanks to him and all of those that have sacrificed so much!
And on another note, today was a good day because we got a wonderful report from the follow-up appointment with the pediatric neurologist. At the evaluation back in May, we were told that if things hadn't improved after six months, Tate would have to go through all of the not-so-fun tests like MRIs and CT scans. Thank goodness, none of that was even discussed today! We were all pretty sure that would be the response, but I can't tell you how great it felt to hear the words, "He's doing wonderfully. Keep up the great work. You can even cancel the next follow-up in a year if you don't have any concerns." Those words were music to my ears.
It's been a little over a year since all of this began with the hypotonia diagnosis. It's great to see a little light at the end of the tunnel and to know that all of his hard work is paying off!
Halloween Again or Laundry Day?
This is what you wear to bed at night when your Mom has put off doing laundry for a little too long.
I've been in a blogging rut lately but do have better posts coming soon: ACU Homecoming, Tate & Momma Date Night, the new President, and 10 years ago.
Halloween 2008
Happy Halloween!
We started off earlier in the week sporting the long-sleeved Halloween shirt with shorts, since the highs have been in the ‘80s around here. Every time he wore the shirt, he liked to point out the pumpkins.
And drum roll…the big costume reveal….
Grrrrrr! Yes, a lion for the 2nd year in a row. I thought it was too cute, and I just couldn’t pass up the on-sale and coupon combo at Target.
Today was a fun day to make some office visits. First we headed to Poppy’s office and got to raid the front desk candy jar.
Then we headed to Grandpa’s office and got to trick-or-treat through all of the offices.
We followed it up with a fun tradition we started last year…Grandpa takes us to lunch. We had to make sure there was room for the tail.
After a good nap and about two bites of dinner (it’s like he knew something good was coming), the fun began. Bring on the candy. We took a picture just like this last year as well. The biggest change this year is that he knows what good stuff it is.
We attempted trick-or-treating at a few houses on the street. I have a feeling next year might go a little more smoothly. He figured out how to say “trick-or-treat” and to tell everyone “hi,” but going up to doors at other people’s homes was a little scary.
Even so, we had lots of fun with the sweetest and cutest lion around.
