I Need a Vacation
I'm just observing, laughing, getting perspective, and thought I would share. The last 45 days of our lives:
- Thanksgiving #1.
- Kelly's sick with weird throat thing.
- Thanksgiving #2 out of town.
- Tate's birthday party at the house.
- Tate gets stomach bug.
- Wade gets stomach bug.
- Tate turns 1.
- Wade survives company layoffs.
- Kelly does half-marathon.
- Kelly recovers from half-marathon.
- Wade, Kelly, & Tate go out of town to see friends.
- Kelly gets stomach bug.
- Wade gets stomach bug.
- Kelly & Tate go out of town for Baby Morgan's birth.
- Christmas #1 out of town.
- Christmas #2.
- Christmas #3.
In between you can throw in training for the half-marathon, Tate's twice a week physical therapy, Christmas shopping, blah, blah, blah. I haven't been more excited for "normal" in quite some time.

Christmas 2007
The festivities began with the first ever visit to see Santa Claus. Taking a 3-week-old to sit in a stranger's lap covered in other kid's germs just didn't seem that appealing last year. But hey, he's 1 now. Germs, scherms.
We weren't sure how Tate would respond. Surprisingly, he didn't have much of a response except wanting to pull on his beard while looking at him like he's the strangest looking person he had ever seen. We were even able to get a little smile out of him for the camera.
Next up was the oh-so-picturesque carriage ride. Several weeks before Christmas, I got it in my head that we must do this. Not sure why, but it seemed to be the ultimate in celebrating the season. Yes, I have officially over hyped something in my head once again. As I walked up with much satisfaction of my family bonding idea, the sign that read carriage rides are...gulp...$30 didn't even detract from my excitement. Considering the ride cost $2 per minute and considering we rode around the square that I've walked around about 100 times before, it was fun. Tate had this wide-eyed look the entire time. Ahhhh, memories!
Then we were off to celebrate Christmas with my side of the family at my sister's house in Temple. Two years ago, my parents had no grandchildren. This Christmas, they have three all under the age of two. Needless to say, it was fun and there were lots of toys!
Here are the Enright cousins with the newest addition, Baby Morgan.
Once it was finally time to open presents, Tate was just about ready for a nap. So, he made it through his stocking, and that was about it.

Next was Christmas with Wade's side of the family. The love of cycling has spread from son to father. Here's Wade giving the overview of the latest and greatest in air pumps.
Tate's latest fascination is people's teeth. Here he is with Mo Mere counting teeth and realizing he has a lot more to go.
And here are the Strzinek cousins, Mary Tish and Trip. They have already proven to be great playmates with Tate, and I predict they will be great babysitters very soon!

Here's Macy humoring us.
It was a wonderful Christmas. I was reminded day after day of the many blessings surrounding me. Every year, I wish I would slow down a little more and soak in the true meaning for this season.Saturday, December 22, 2007
Catching up on tags
__________________________________________________
This is from a tag by Joanna. You're supposed to take each letter of your middle name and come up with a word that describes you. Wow, even with only four letters in my middle name (Erin), I had a hard time coming up with descriptions. Here goes:
E – Emotional. I’m not emotional as in crazy and all over the place. I’m emotional as in I wear my emotions on my sleeve…and on my collar, my buttons, everywhere. At times, I really wish I could change this about myself. If something gets me going in the tears department, there’s no holding back. I can’t stop them. And unfortunately, I don’t really have the sweet, pretty cry. I typically have the face-turns-red-lips-swell-up ugly cry. Wade says my cry stars with the lips first, so at least he has some warning that it’s coming. You can only imagine what raging hormones during my pregnancy did. Good times!
R – Relaxed. I hope this is accurate and I’m not just oblivious. Although after saying how emotional I am, you may wonder. I’d like to think that I have a relaxed and easygoing nature. I like to be adaptable, not too uptight, and ready for whatever life brings.
I – Introvert. In my last job, we took the Myers-Briggs personality test a zillion times. Ever single time, I scored as an introvert with a strong extrovert tendency. My boss and my team were always surprised. For my job as a manger, I had to be an extrovert. Things just worked better that way. But as the test tells you, your true tendency is in regards to what fuels you. For me, that’s downtime and quiet. A good friend once told me that when she first met me, she thought I was snobby. Of course, I was mortified to hear this. Unfortunately, this comes from the introvert side that gets shy and a little self-conscious when meeting new people. I’m glad she told me that, and I try now to be a little more assertive. But if I’m meeting you in person for the first time, help me out some.
N – Neutral. The word I really wanted was objective, but this is the best synonym that starts with an n. I’m sure it drives many of my family and friends crazy, but I’m one of those people that always likes to see the other side of the story. “Let’s give them the benefit of the doubt, you never know until you’ve walked in their shoes, etc., etc.” It may not be the answer for world peace, but it just seems to me that we’d all be a little better off if more people would take the time to think from someone else’s perspective. Sorry for the soapbox.

This tag is from Wade. You're supposed to write 12 random things about Christmas for you. Again, this proved to be a little more difficult than I thought. You can sense the desperation for ideas toward the end.
- I was one of those kids that searched through the entire house (or my parent’s trunks) to get a sneak peak at my presents. Once I was a little older, I would even try to unwrap the presents under the tree to see what they were and then wrap them back up.
- I was also the kind of kid that woke up at 3:00 a.m. and ran to the living room (after going in to wake up my sister) to see if Santa had come already. One year, my parents had just finished getting everything wrapped and under the tree and hadn’t even made it to bed yet. Woops.
- While growing up, the only presents that were under the tree were ones from other relatives (maybe because my parents figured out #1). So Christmas morning was so much fun waking up to see two or three times as many presents. Too bad my dad would make us wait until about 10:00 a.m. to even start opening. Then we would have to open one at a time, so the entire process wasn’t finished until almost lunchtime.
- One of my all-time favorite presents growing up was when I got my own phone line and my own Garfield phone (hello ‘80s!). I opened the box to discover the phone, which was pretty exciting. But then, I heard a distant ringing in the back of the house. My mom was dialing my new number. I about lost it with excitement.
- Some close runners-up were the Barbie Cottage, the Cabbage Patch Kid, and even the recycled stereo with a tape player, record player, and 8-track player. I thought I was pretty big time.
- Our stocking presents were never wrapped. In Wade’s family they wrapped the stocking presents. We’ve decided to go the Strzinek route, and it is pretty fun.
- As an adult, one of my biggest holiday traditions is the day-after-Christmas sales. I am up bright and early ready for some bargains. I have just about the same route every year: Target, The Container Store, Crate & Barrel, and Pottery Barn (in that order). We have lots of Christmas decorations, and I don’t think I’ve paid full price for any of them.
- I’m excited to start some traditions with Tate. I want to buy him an ornament and Christmas PJs each year, pick out a Christmas book each year, and eventually have a special “Tate” tree in his room.
- I love Christmas music. Despite what my husband says (you know what I mean if you read his blog), I could shop in a Christmas-decorated store and listen to Christmas music from October-December.
- The first Christmas Wade & I spent together as a married couple was memorable. We both had a stomach bug. I have now officially referred to a stomach bug on this blog way too many times.
- I’m running out of randoms here. I’ve only had one White Christmas, and it was when we were visiting family in Oregon.
- I hate egg nog.

Welcome to the family!
Introducing my newest niece.....
Morgan PaigeTate & I made the trek to Temple on Tuesday in time to be there when she was born. Everything went great, and it's hard to believe that my younger sister is a mom of two little girls. I know that Morgan's life will be filled with lots of love...and laughter! I can't wait to find out what her personality will be like and tell her all of the goofy and funny stories about her mom:
- from when I made her let me pick out all of her outfits
- when we played school and I was always the teacher and she was the student
- when we would talk to each other from the bedroom next door with our Cabbage Patch Kid walkie-talkies
- when she didn't like the boy Cabbage Patch Kid she got for Christmas, so I got 2
- when I gave her a bloody nose (I cried more than she did)
- all of the funny moments of "Grumpy Shannon" when she would wake up
- and our fun (we are actually friends) semester @ ACU together
The joys of aunthood! :) If Morgan turns out to be anything like her mom or dad, she'll be a wonderful person to be around full of faith and love. I'm so happy for your new family of four.
Love, Aunt Kelly.

The Latest & Greatest
I’m also really beginning to wonder about my immune system. I have been sick more in the past year than probably the past five years combined. I don’t get it…I sleep good every night, take my vitamins, wash my hands. What else is a girl to do?
_________________________________________________
In case you just haven’t seen enough pictures of my son on my blog, check out the great photo montage Wade made for Tate’s first birthday. So sweet…yes, I cried.

As I’ve mentioned before, I love getting the mail. So you can imagine that this time of year is the ultimate season of mail-getting. I love finding out which Christmas cards and photos we’ll get each day. And here’s a little tip. Instead of throwing away all of those great pictures of your family and friends when Christmas is over, cut the picture portion out of the card and then you can put that in a frame, on the fridge, photo album, etc. I have a giant bulletin board up in our family room that is covered with pictures from all of the Christmas cards we’ve received in previous years.
Hopefully I’ll get ours out by this weekend. Even in our pre-baby days, we sent a Christmas card with a family picture. Wade, me, and Macy. Unfortunately, Macy might not make the cut next year. It was tough getting a picture of two smiling adults, one happy baby looking at the camera, and one still dog. It definitely wasn’t the photographer’s fault (she’s great!), but we may simplify the process a little more next year. Sorry Macy!
So to all of the healthy folks with no stomach bug out there, enjoy your evening of holiday parties and fun. Yes, I’m sticking my tongue out again.

Sloooooooooooooooooow and Steady Wins the Race
Well I didn’t quite win the race, or even come close, but I finished! Woo-hoo!!!! Sunday was the big day, and the saying that “if you don’t like the Texas weather, just wait 5 minutes” proved true once again. Saturday – 80 degrees, sunny, warm. Sunday – heavy mist/light rain, windy, cloudy, 40 degrees. Lovely. The roads were slick and my arms and hands were cold and numb, but I survived. My goal was to finish hopefully by 3:30. I actually finished at 3:26, so I was pleased. Yes, that’s 3 hours and 26 minutes. I walked the entire thing. It didn’t break records by any means, but at least I wasn’t the last one. Whew!
I’m glad it’s over. I’m glad I did it. I’m glad it’s over. Oh, I think I said that already.
And big props to the over-50 crowd! My Dad (on the left sporting the goofy—must be genetic—thumbs up) and his friend, Mark, both ran the half marathon and finished with some impressive times – 2:12 and 1:57. Not bad for a couple of baby boomers. Also congrats to my friends, Laura and Mike, who finished as well. No pictures, since it was hard to spot them in the crowd of 11,000.
I don’t see another full marathon in my near future (at least until the small children stage of life is over). But, I definitely want to do another half. In fact, my favorite part of the entire race was taking that turn for the half route, while the fools (I mean fulls) had to keep going straight.

Happy 1 Year Baby Tate!

So this is the last time I guess I can publicly call him my baby. I’m sure I’ll still call him that in person for the next 20 years, but after December 5, “the books” refer to him as a toddler. That’s going to take getting used to.
I figured it was fitting to do his final monthly block picture (yes, I’m retiring the blocks after 12 months) in the bathtub. This kid is crazy for his baths. He could be in the crabbiest, most tired mood and then the second you say the word bath and place him in the tub, pure joy takes over. If you look closely, you’ll see the waves in the tub. This is from the constant, constant excited kicking. We all get a bath when Tate takes a bath.
This past month did have some firsts. The first big boy haircut. I was putting off paying $15 for a kid’s haircut as long as I could. But, as you can see, the hair was getting a little crazy. Before:

After:

I wondered how he would do. The place we went to had a little car to sit in with a steering wheel. Well, his Daddy taught him a love for steering wheels a few months ago. Ever since then, if he sees one anywhere near him, he will lunge practically out of your arms to play with it. So, he was in heaven. The poor stylist. He was having so much fun and was in full leg-kicking motion, so it was hard to keep him still. I was impressed with how good of a job she did.
And of course, as the haircut was happening, I cried. It just made him look so much bigger and grown-up. The realization that my little baby was turning into a little boy.
Tate also had that infamous right of passage in the life of a little one…his first spaghetti dinner. As you can see, he liked it very much. The latest on food is about the same. Spoon with yogurt…yes. Spoon with much of anything else…no. I really don’t mind letting him feed himself everything, but it makes SUCH a mess. I’m looking forward to the day that he can learn how to eat from a plate or with his own spoon. Right now, those are just thrown on the floor.
This past month also allowed for a lot of cousin time. He and my sister’s little girl, Mallory, are exactly 6 months apart and are getting to the age that they can play with each other more. It’s pretty fun to watch. They also had their first cousin bath. You know, they’ll hate this picture in 16 years. Tate is also very excited to meet his new cousin Morgan soon. She should be here any day now.

He still loves to read books, go on walks, swing outside, listen to music, listen to Mommy sing goofy songs, clap his hands for everything, and play parachute under the bed sheets with Daddy. He repeated the word bird one day with me at the park. But, I haven’t been able to get him to say it again. He prefers his own language, and his “Tateish” sounds and noises are ever increasing. He also broke 4 new teeth this month. All at about the same time. That was a long week for us all.

His physical therapy is still going well. One night last week we put him to bed but could hear him talking and playing for quite awhile afterwards. I went in to see what he was up to. Low and behold, he was sitting up all on his own. He's been sitting up for quite awhile, but hadn't been able to get into the sitting position from lying down. As soon as he saw me, he started cracking up. It was too cute. Now, he’s a pro at getting into a sitting position on his own and loves for everyone to clap and cheer for him. We’re seeing a lot more movement and finagling his body around.
On the actual day of his birthday, we met the A-Team (we already have them destined to be Tate’s best friend/college roommate and future wife) in Southlake for a fun picnic lunch outside. It was a gorgeous day, and the kids and the Moms had a great time.

Then the big day was capped off with dinner and birthday cake at Mimi and Grandpa’s house. This cake experience started like the first time around, but with some nudging, he realized that it’s some pretty good stuff.
Before Tate was born, I had read so many parents talk about how much they loved their children. Honestly, I sometimes thought you were just supposed to say that kind of stuff. Wow, I had no idea. I love this little person more than I could ever imagine. And, it’s truly an unconditional love. Even when he throws up on me, doesn’t take a long enough nap, or whines all day from teething, I still love him. It’s a mystery, but one that I’m forever grateful.I can’t thank God enough for the gift of this past year. This little boy brings a special joy to my heart like nothing else. I love seeing that already he has unique characteristics and a personality that is all his own. I hope that I can foster that and help him grow into that special person God created him to be. I can’t wait to walk alongside him and watch as he learns all about this world.
Bring it on year 2!

Twas the Night Before
So tonight, I'm remembering December 4, 2006. Who knew that less than 24 hours later (although he sure did take his own sweet time arriving), we would meet this precious little boy and love him so much?
